*** New Zealand Premiere & Fundraiser Screening ***

About the film
Following a new generation of young Afghan women cyclists, Afghan Cycles uses the bicycle to tell a story of women’s rights – human rights – and the struggles faced by Afghan women on a daily basis, from discrimination to abuse, to the oppressive silencing of their voices in all aspects of contemporary society.

These women ride despite cultural barriers, despite infrastructure, and despite death threats, embracing the power and freedom that comes with the sport.

Huge thanks to Simone Summer for suggesting this film!

About the screening
We’re delighted to be able to bring a Thoughtful Thursday Whanganui audience together to see this important and award winning documentary. Plus we’re even more delighted to offer all of the ticket income as a donation to Whanganui’s fabulous Green Bikes/Pahikara Matomato, who help remove the barriers to cycling that some people in our community still encounter. See https://sustainablewhanganui.org.nz/green-bikes/ for more about Green Bikes and what they do.

Whanganui is increasingly proving itself to be cycle friendly with new pathways connecting up different parts of the city, the planned velodrome roof, and of course the soon to be installed new river bridge at Upokongaro for the mountains to the sea cycle way – all designed with cycling in mind and the safety of those doing it.
